Stewardship Through Design

Chris Holmes is a Director and Team Leader at SPACE Architects, having worked at the practice for over seven years. Passionate for regeneration, and the re-purposing of buildings, Chris strives to breathe new life into existing structures, so they remain relevant and can be enjoyed by future generations.

This is evident in some of Chris’ recent impactful projects at SPACE, such as the Farrell Centre, an ‘Urban Room’ in Newcastle upon Tyne, and STEAM Studios for Ron Dearing UTC, a conversion of a 1920’s Fire Station in Hull. These projects creatively re-used and re-purposed existing, vacant buildings; developing complimentary designs that enhanced functionality, accessibility and the historic value.

Chris is an enthusiastic, supportive mentor and Team Leader, with a friendly disposition and an eye for detail. A trusted point of contact for clients and colleagues alike, he has over 25 years of experience across numerous sectors and is a true believer in the power of collaborative, thoughtful design.

Beyond the office, Chris enjoys spending time with his family, walking in the great outdoors and experiencing different countries and cultures. Whilst he now calls Newcastle ‘home’, he remains a proud Yorkshireman and travels back to support his beloved Bradford City, whenever he can!

As a Director of SPACE, Chris draws on his extensive knowledge to support both colleagues and clients. By championing creative re-use as a practical, people-centred approach to sustainable design, he has shaped the practice’s philosophy on regeneration, ensuring every project delivers lasting value for people and place.
