As the year draws to a close and the festive season approaches, the SPACE team comes together to mark the traditions that have become part of life at the practice. The weeks leading up to Christmas offer a chance to reflect on our shared experiences, support our wider community, and recognise the effort that went into another successful and fulfilling year.
One of those traditions is the Giving Tree. Each Christmas, it becomes the studio’s focal point, filling up with gifts from the team for children at Cherry Tree View. Over the years, we’ve built a close partnership with volunteers at Cherry Tree View, supporting their work for some of the North East’s most vulnerable. As Christmas approaches, that relationship feels especially meaningful. Watching the gifts gather beneath the tree is a powerful reminder of the SPACE team’s generosity and the lasting impact of small, thoughtful acts.
Away from the studio, the annual SPACE Christmas Party offered a chance to come together in a different setting. This year, the team gathered at Jesmond Dene House for an evening of good food, easy conversation and festive spirit. A surprise performance from two singing waiters set the tone for the night, leading naturally into a spirited sing-along to New York, New York. At one point, the conga line came to a standstill, simply because so many of us were on our feet, weaving between tables and chairs around the dancefloor. It was a small but telling moment, capturing the warmth and joy that carried through the evening.
Back in the office, another much-anticipated tradition reached its conclusion with the Great SPACE Bake Off results day. Phil Lloyd successfully defended his Star Baker title for a second year, impressing judges with his expertly made sausage rolls. His prize was particularly fitting, a handmade cake stand that he had turned and glazed himself. Close behind was Alice Quigley, whose light and fruity pavlovas secured second place, followed by Sarah Bedwell, awarded third for her carefully crafted choux pastries. As always, Bake Off provided the perfect excuse to enjoy delicious bakes during autumn and winter.
As the final days of the year unfolded, we also marked the end of 2025 with our annual SPACE review video. The film brings together highlights from across the practice, celebrating award-winning colleagues including Catherine Sinclair and Liam Clerkin, alongside projects such as Hopetown Darlington and the Farrell Centre. It also reflects the studio's growth, with new faces joining the team over the past year.
Taken together, these moments capture the spirit of the weeks leading up to Christmas at SPACE. They speak to the value we place on community and connection, both within the studio and beyond it. As we head into the festive break, we do so with gratitude for the people, partnerships and experiences that have shaped the year. We wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and look ahead to 2026, our 70th anniversary, with anticipation.
