Three Wins at the National Constructing Excellence Awards

November 11, 2025

Members of our team travelled to London for the Constructing Excellence National Awards, proud to represent the North East in three categories and even more delighted to return home with recognition in all three.

Our Remaking Beamish project received the Regeneration and Conservation Award, a recognition that honours years of dedication from both our team and those from Beamish Museum. Phil Loyd of SPACE Architects explains, “Remaking Beamish has been one of the most meaningful experiences of my career. It is a unique project that felt like a shared act of care for a place that holds so many memories for Carinna and I, as well as for our families. Every story we heard, every resource we studied, and every detail that found its way back into the architecture carries the experiences of those who lived it. Each new exhibit tells a story that will help preserve our built and social heritage for generations to come. What has meant a great deal is seeing how deeply people connect with it. Watching visitors recognise something familiar, hearing them share memories and emotions sparked by these places, reminds us why thoughtful conservation and regeneration are so important to our communities.”

The evening also brought national recognition for SPACE’s Head of Research, Catherine Sinclair, who received the G4C Future Leader Award. The achievement reflects her commitment to research-led design and her contribution to decarbonising the built environment through tools such as D-CARB, her open-access early-stage Revit plug-in launched earlier this year. In Catherine's words:

“Winning the G4C Future Leader Award in the North East earlier this year was already an incredible honour. To then be recognised nationally is something I never imagined. I’m still a little shocked, but mostly just incredibly grateful. It feels like a moment that belongs to many people. It marks the close of my KTP, the beginning of my role as Head of Research at SPACE, and follows the launch of D-CARB, which makes it all the more special. Research is only as powerful as the hands it reaches, and this award recognises every collaborator, individual, and design team who believe in open knowledge and the power of collective action to create meaningful change. Across the North East, there is an incredible concentration of innovation and environmental ambition within the built environment, something reflected in the regional and national awards this year. Coming off the back of our own climate conference, I couldn’t help but feel inspired by the conversations happening here and by the people and organisations leading that progress.”

SPACE was also honoured to receive the ESG Award, a recognition that aligns closely with the principles that guide the practice. The award acknowledges the value of designing responsibly and the belief that better outcomes for people, places, and the planet emerge from decisions grounded in care and integrity.

Of the fifteen awards presented on the night, five were awarded to organisations from the North East. SPACE is proud to have contributed to that success and to have brought three of those awards home. The national recognition builds on a period of momentum for the practice and reflects the dedication and ambition that run through our work.

SPACE extends its thanks to Constructing Excellence and to the judges for their continued recognition and offers congratulations to all winners and nominees from across the regions.
