Decarbonising the Built Environment

The _shift Conference

Each November, our annual climate conference _shift brings people together to confront the realities of the climate crisis and to explore the role the built environment must play in addressing it.

An Overview of _shift

_shift turns awareness into action. The day invites attendees from within and outside the built environment to exchange climate knowledge, question assumptions and explore new ways of working that place environmental responsibility at the centre of every decision.

Across its editions, _shift has considered how design can anticipate long-term consequences, how policy can support meaningful change and how material choices can influence the footprint of a building from the outset. It is a space for collaboration and ambition, grounded in the belief that progress across the built environment depends on collective effort.

Memorable Moments From _shift

Each year _shift is chaired by Surfers Against Sewage Founder Chris Hines, whose guidance sets the tone of the day and keeps the focus on practical possibility. Over the years, we have welcomed many voices that continue to influence how the industry thinks and acts. Jonathon Porritt CBE has spoken about the futures we create. Emily Penn has shared a compelling view on responsibility and the importance of micro-actions. John Elkington has challenged traditional thinking and encouraged regenerative practice. Climate Activist Clover Hogan, Patagonia Marketing Manager Gabe Davies, and Eco-Adventurer Andy Pag have brought energy, insight, and urgency, each in their own way.

These speakers represent a broad mix of expertise, perspective and lived experience. Their contributions form a collective momentum that carries beyond the event, informing the decisions made in studios, on sites and across organisations.

Knowledge Exchange Beyond the Day

_shift isn't confined to a single day; it is a living resource that supports the sector year-round. Every edition is recorded and added to an open archive that houses over 200 presentations, interviews and panel discussions. The archive supports ongoing learning, provides references for teams across the value chain, and helps weave climate awareness into everyday practice.

This continuity reflects the purpose of _shift. Meaningful change happens through repeated effort and  relies on people working together, shared understanding and clear intention. The archive strengthens that process by keeping insight accessible and active.

Invitation

Whatever field you work in, we invite you to engage with _shift. Explore the archive, revisit the conversations, and discover how you can advance the decarbonisation of the built environment.
