On 19 July 2026, a collision at the Port of Tyne damaged shipping containers carrying nurdles, the small plastic pellets used to manufacture almost all plastic products.
This incident has brought the environmental impacts of plastic into sharp focus. Around 25 tonnes of these pellets are believed to have been released into the River Tyne and the North Sea, where tides and currents quickly dispersed them along the coastline 1. It is believed to be the largest recorded spill in Europe and the UK 2. They are highly persistent pollutants that will continue to circulate in ocean currents and wash ashore for decades 3.
Unlike larger pieces of plastic debris, nurdles are classified as primary microplastics, with as many as 445,970 tonnes entering the environment annually 4. Their small size and buoyancy enable them to disperse rapidly through rivers, estuaries and coastal environments, where they are exceptionally difficult to recover. Marine organisms, including fish, seabirds and shellfish, frequently mistake the pellets for food, leading to ingestion which can cause malnutrition, starvation and wider impacts throughout the food chain 5. The nurdles themselves act as “toxic sponges”, where a lot of the pollutants already within the water are hydrophobic, so they gather on the surface of the nurdles. Pollutants can be a million times more concentrated on the surface of the nurdles than within the water and when a fish eats a nurdle, some of the pollutants come loose 3.
The incident also highlights a less obvious issue. Every nurdle released into the environment represents the raw material for products consumed by industries around the world, including construction. If our sector is one of the largest users of plastics, then it also has a significant responsibility for reducing demand for virgin polymers. The construction industry is one of the largest consumers of plastic products, with nurdles used to manufacture almost all products used, from PVC pipes to window frames. The incident provides a timely reminder that the environmental impact of plastic begins long before it becomes a building product, presenting an opportunity for architects to rethink how, where and why plastics are specified.
As the construction industry is one of the world's largest consumers of plastics, it also has a responsibility to reduce demand for virgin polymers.
The construction industry consumes 20% of all plastic and 70% of all PVC produced globally each year 6. The global market for Construction Plastic was estimated at $112 billion dollars in 2025 and is predicted to reach $194.4 billion dollars by 2032 7. The construction industries reliance on virgin polymers needs to be reviewed, with the transition to a sustainable built environment requiring a fundamental change in the way we design and build.
Non plastic alternatives do exist and products manufactured from biobased materials have fewer health and environmental impacts through the products lifecycle than fossil based plastic materials 8. Chemicals used to create plastics have been linked to cancer, reproductive issues, asthma, obesity and many more health impacts9. Without change, plastic use is projected to nearly double by 2050 which will also increase all of plastics associated harms 9.
Consideration needs to be given at the earliest stage of the design process to reduce the use of virgin polymers within the building. We need to factor in the full impact of a product reviewing all costs associated with environmental and human health, choosing materials that deliver long-term positive impacts.
Within the Habitable Designing out Plastics Report, it is suggested to start with reducing and reviewing the use of two of the most toxic chemicals in production: polyvinyl chloride and polystyrene, both of which are used widely within the construction industry. PVC production is having a significant effect on the environment due to it driving the use of vinyl chloride, a chemical that is considered to be a human carcinogen 10. We can start to minimise the use of these toxic chemicals by starting to specify biobased materials such as linoleum or timber.
The Tyne nurdle incident should not be viewed solely as a marine pollution incident. It is also a reminder that every plastic product begins as a pellet manufactured from virgin fossil resources. Architects may never see those pellets, but the products specified determine whether demand for them continues to grow. By reducing unnecessary plastics, selecting healthier materials and embracing circular design principles, the profession has an opportunity to lessen both the environmental and human impacts of plastic production long before products reach the construction site.
