Updates from the Studio

At SPACE Architects, we’re committed to recognising dedication and celebrating the unique career journeys of our talented team members. This summer, we spotlighted three colleagues who have recently stepped into new roles within the practice. Matthew Turnbull has been promoted to Senior Architect, while Liam Clerkin and Shawn Lithgow are both advancing into the role of Associate Architect. These well-deserved promotions reflect each of their outstanding contributions to our practice.  

Joining the SPACE team in 2024 as a qualified Architect, Matthew Turnbull champions a contemporary design approach, with a wealth of architectural experience and design insight. Matthew has contributed to several major regeneration projects during his time at SPACE, including the Darlington East Street Grade A office scheme, and the wider town centre regeneration masterplan. He most enjoys projects that focus on regeneration, where the history, character, and aspirations of a place can shape its design. Matthew is a firm believer that the best architecture coms from listening carefully, being empathetic to the people and communities who will use a space and creating design-led solutions that are routed in their context. In his new role, Matthew will be taking on greater responsibility for leading projects, coordinating multidisciplinary teams, and supporting projects from early concept through to planning.  

Shawn Lithgow began his journey with SPACE Architects in 2025, becoming a part of the educations team during a busy and exciting period of expansion within the practice. In the 12 months since, he has actively contributed to several key projects, including seeing through the initial bids of St Columba Primary School, Blaydon Primary School, and acting as project lead on Woodkirk Academy. His day-to-day responsibilities include managing the day-to-day tasks and meetings, coordinating the team in the production of design information to hit gateway submissions, and collaborating with other consultants working on the project. Continuing this project, now in his new role, Shawn looks forward to seeing work starting on site what will be a modern school with excellent sport and drama facilities, benefiting future students as well as the wider local community.

Congratulations to Matt, Liam and Shawn on their well-deserved promotions. As they take the next step in their careers at SPACE, we have also welcomed several new faces, each beginning a new chapter of their own with the practice. Among those joining the team are Paula White and Josh Banks, who have recently started as Senior Architect and Senior Architectural Technologist, respectively.

Bringing extensive experience in the education sector, Paula White’s passion for architecture is evident in both her professional achievements and her personal pursuits. Her holistic approach, which combines technical skill, creative thinking, and a genuine love for the craft, ensures every project she undertakes is grounded in both innovation and practicality.

In her new role at SPACE, Paula is committed to supporting the development and delivery of diverse projects. She emphasises thoughtful design, innovative problem-solving, and close collaboration with clients and project teams. Her attention to detail and ability to find practical solutions ensure that creative visions are realised while meeting each project’s individual requirements.

Paula is a long-time admirer of the work of Frank Lloyd Wright, particularly his contextually influenced design approach and his courage to push the boundaries of design. She is also fascinated by bridges and architectural rhythms, an interest that informs her professional outlook and inspires her beyond the office. In her personal time, she enjoys channelling her creativity into gardening and home renovation projects and is always eager to take on something new and explore imaginative solutions.
