SPACE Recertified as a B Corporation

We're proud to announce that we have been recertified as a B Corp, following the successful resubmission of our B Lab Standard Assessment. Originally certified in 2022 as the first architectural firm in the North East to achieve B Corp status, this recertification continues that position. We are pleased to have achieved an improved score of 100.3, reflecting a practice that has become more assured in how it measures impact and more deliberate in how it responds.

Our 2026 recertification reflects SPACE's continued commitment to people, planet and place, as well as our resolve to design buildings that respect the boundaries of nature and the environment. The core values of our practice align with B Corp principles, turning ambition into accountable action and ensuring that quality, environmental responsibility and social purpose are embedded in everything we do.

B Corp is demanding by design. Recertification requires detailed evidence, from governance structures through to environmental performance and day-to-day decision making, all subject to independent verification. It tests how a business operates at every level, requiring transparency, consistency and proof. Following the submission, companies enter an audit phase led by B Lab's approved assurance providers, who verify that all requirements for recertification have been met.

At SPACE, this aligns with how we already work. Our focus on people, planet and place is not a layer applied after the fact, but something that runs through our projects and studio culture. Whether developing innovative decarbonisation tools such as D-CARB, reviving heritage assets or refining how we deliver net zero buildings, our intention remains the same: to take responsibility for the impact of our work.

We couldn’t have achieved recertification without a few key members of our team who played a vital role throughout the process. Marie Carr, Bid Manager at SPACE Architects, was central to the effort, keeping everything on track during the assessment period. Her organisation, dependability and calm, reassuring approach reflect the values that sit at the heart of a B Corp.

Both our original certification in 2022 and this recent recertification were driven by the ambition and leadership of SPACE’s CEO, Rob Charlton. His long-standing belief that business should be a force for good continues to guide the direction of Space Group, influencing how we operate, who we work with and the standards we hold ourselves to.

We would also like to extend our gratitude to the wonderful Lynn Telford, whose expertise supported both our initial certification and this recertification. Her work on B Corp marked a fitting final contribution before her recent retirement, following many years with SPACE Architects.

Since our initial certification, the number of B Corp practices across the UK has grown steadily, now standing at more than 70. It is encouraging to see this momentum build across the profession, with a wider commitment to accountability and long-term thinking taking hold.

Being a B Corp has always been more than a badge. It provides a framework that reflects the values of the practice and holds us to account. From our Science Based Targets to Best Companies recognition, each step strengthens our commitment to creating a positive, measurable impact through our work. This recertification is a testament to the collective effort of our team and a shared approach to doing business in a more responsible way.
