Making Waves at Live Theatre

Live Theatre
Nearly two decades after our relationship with Live Theatre began, it continues beyond the spaces we helped create. Through our sponsorship of All at Sea, we’re proud to support the people and ideas that keep theatre's magic alive.

Live Theatre is a warm, welcoming place that embraces you the moment you enter. SPACE’s 2008 redevelopment repurposed and expanded its historic Grade II buildings, creating an intimate theatre alongside rehearsal studios, writers’ rooms and new spaces for audiences and artists. Sitting along the Quayside, Live Theatre remains a cultural gem of the region.

Continuing to support Live Theatre, SPACE Architect’s recently sponsored All at Sea, a production written by North East playwright Alison Carr and directed by Maria Crocker, which received critical acclaim from The Guardian and BBC Look North. Several SPACE members saw All at Sea during its Newcastle run at Live Theatre and praised the show for its captivating performances and unique storytelling.

The play is a fictional retelling of the famous Canoe Man case, following a married couple, Deborah and Colin, as they grapple with the aftermath of a life-altering decision made under crippling debt. Set against a North East backdrop, the production asks audiences to consider how far they might go to pursue financial and emotional security.

"Corbitt and Belcher are excellent at the push-pull of contradictory emotions, their troubling chemistry making the play’s grisly conclusion feel necessary.”

The Guardian's Review of 'All at Sea'

The master plan was well thought out, but it had detrimental consequences. Colin rowed out into the North Sea in a canoe and faked his death, planning for the couple to claim his life insurance and run away to start a new life. The reality, though, is far less glamorous, as Colin is forced into hiding to uphold the façade, while Deborah puts on a show of grieving for a man who is really living under the stairs.

On September 17th, members of SPACE Architects had the privilege of getting a behind-the-scenes look at the rehearsal process, witnessing the actors’ and director’s dedication and craft in real time during a two-hour session. With just two actors, Sarah Belcher as Deborah and Phil Corbitt as Colin, it was mesmerising to watch them capture such a wide range of emotions while skilfully exploring themes of marriage, deceit, and the extremes of human behaviour.

It was also clear that director Maria Crocker and writer Alison Carr have a deep connection to the story, and they portray this sensitive, complex narrative with skill. Every detail, from vocal intonations to stage props, was thoughtfully considered throughout the process.

Intimate and confronting in its themes, the production transports you into the couple’s living room, forces you to question how far you would go for financial security, and leaves you both morally conflicted and empowered.

Following its Newcastle run, All at Sea received further recognition when it won the Rose Fisher Award for Writing from Laurels, a testament to Alison Carr’s impactful writing. She expertly combines humour with genuine reflection, exploring the complexities of marriage and financial strain with equal sensitivity and intensity.

“We all thoroughly enjoyed it. It’s a great story that takes a much deeper look at the husband and wife at the centre of the infamous canoe story, with two brilliant performances. Having seen some of the rehearsal, it was great to see how the production had developed into the final show.”

The enthusiastic response to All at Sea highlights theatre's enduring appeal. We are proud to have supported Live Theatre for nearly 20 years, ever since SPACE Architects played an instrumental role in the building’s development. Independent venues like Live Theatre continue to depend on strong regional interest and community support. Seeing All at Sea posters across Newcastle’s Metro stations and street corners reminded us how local promotion can draw audiences to such captivating productions.

Supporting regional art has never been more important in an era of rapid technological change and economic uncertainty, as human expression and craft continue to inspire and challenge us. SPACE is proud to sponsor such a well-acted and thought-provoking performance, and we hope audiences will come along to experience All at Sea for themselves.

At SPACE Architects, we look forward to future productions hosted by Live Theatre and wish the crew, cast and production team all the best as the play travels to Scarborough for a few more weeks of performances.
