Tom Balsdon

Part I Architectural Assistant

A Thoughtful Apprentice with a Considered Approach

Tom is a Part I Architectural Assistant at SPACE Architects, having joined the practice in 2024 after completing his BA (Hons) in Architecture at Newcastle University. His interest in architecture was shaped through hands-on experience gained while working with a small construction team after finishing secondary education and alongside his university studies. During this time, he contributed to the delivery of bespoke new-build homes and extensions across a range of scales. This early exposure to the construction process has informed his practical and measured approach to design.

In practice, Tom has contributed to a wide variety of projects across different stages of design and delivery. He has worked on key schemes for Darlington Borough Council, including the Cityheart – Darlington Town Centre development and the Central Park STEM Development, where he played a significant role in preparing the project’s successful bid and developing the first phase of the Town Centre scheme. His experience with existing buildings includes refurbishment and creative reuse projects such as Stockton Town Hall and the Library at Murray.

Consistently applying feedback and demonstrating a proactive attitude, Tom is a reliable and committed apprentice. Known for his genuine and kind nature and his ever-present warm smile, he is a dependable and supportive presence within the team. Alongside practice, he is currently studying for his master’s degree at Northumbria University.

Outside of architecture, Tom maintains a long-standing passion for running, representing Morpeth Harriers in both track and cross-country events. He also enjoys playing golf and tennis, albeit as a fair-weather player. The focus and perseverance he shows outside of work carry naturally into his professional development at SPACE.
