A Heart for Heritage and Craftsmanship

Phil Lloyd is an accredited Conservation Architect, bringing a lifelong passion for heritage and traditional craft to his work. Originally from South Wales, he combines technical expertise with a grounded perspective on the repair and reimagining of historic buildings.

For nearly two decades, Phil has led SPACE’s conservation projects with wisdom, confidence and care. He has played a central role in the Remaking Beamish project at Beamish Museum, helping bring two new exhibits to life, one at Pockerley and another in the 1950s Town. The project was later recognised by Helen Barker, Director of Collections, Programmes and Interpretation, as a major factor in Beamish winning Museum of the Year. It stands as a testament to Phil’s commitment to preserving heritage assets for generations of new audiences to enjoy.

Across the practice, Phil has contributed to projects including the current Durham Academy DfE school and the listed buildings at Appleby Grammar School. He has also applied his expertise to higher education schemes, commercial offices, leisure projects and healthcare environments, demonstrating versatility alongside his specialist conservation knowledge.

Whether taking pottery classes, or competing in the Great SPACE Bake Off, of which he is the back-to-back champion for 2024 and 2025, his creativity continually reflects his appreciation for the handmade. Outside of work, Phil is a keen runner and a recent amateur triathlete, having cycled over 400km around The Netherlands with his family.

As an Associate Director, Phil plays a pivotal role in SPACE’s conservation ethos. His work bridges tradition and innovation, ensuring that the past remains an active and meaningful part of the future.
