Architect
From First Sketch to Strategic Place-Making
Aligned with SPACE’s sustainability ethos and a commitment to creating meaningful impact for local communities, Matthew Turnbull champions a contemporary design approach, exploring the integration of technology to streamline workflows and improve efficiency.
Joining the SPACE team in 2024 as a qualified Architect, Matthew brought with him a wealth of architectural experience and design insight, having contributed to projects across retail, commercial, civic, cultural and residential sectors. His creative upbringing afforded him valuable insight into the intricacies of design and construction, enabling him to bring a fresh perspective to the practice.
Matthew has contributed to several strategic projects at SPACE Architects, including the multi-sector masterplan for Darlington town centre, where his design and visual communication work supported the team in securing a successful Pagabo framework bid. He also played an instrumental role in shaping the Health Innovation District, developing later-living accommodation that responds sensitively to landscape, movement and community needs. Across these projects, Matthew combines strong urban design reasoning with clear diagramming and coordinated delivery to create coherent, place-led proposals.
Matthew’s strengths lie in interrogating project briefs and translating them into carefully considered design responses that often exceed clients’ expectations. In addition to his professional work, he has participated in numerous design competitions throughout his career, gaining regional, national and international recognition.
In his spare time, Matthew enjoys exploring different cultures through art and travel, reflecting his naturally curious and creative nature. He is regarded by colleagues as a thoughtful, trusted and talented member of the team.
