Ian Johnston

Associate Director

Committed to Improving Lives with Every Project

Ian Johnston has worked for SPACE Architects for just under 20 years, contributing to a range of projects during his time at the practice. As an open-minded and caring individual, who is driven by a community focus, Ian is a proud member of what he claims to be the ‘dysfunctional SPACE family.’

One particularly impactful project that Ian contributed to was the Women’s Low Secure Unit in York, a £9 million forensic mental health facility, which was constructed alongside the existing operational facility. This Unit enables the care and rehabilitation of women in need, supporting the local community.

Outside of work, Ian’s caring nature stretches beyond human beings to four legged friends. He fosters huskies on behalf of Siberian Husky Welfare UK, giving them a kind upbringing before they go to their forever homes. Additionally, Ian enjoys watching his two sons playing Rugby on the weekends, cheering them on from the sidelines. His supportive attitude, and passion for charity reflects into his work life, where Ian is noted as a trusted point of contact, often putting other people’s needs before his own.

As an Associate Director, Ian balances several responsibilities in a calm and collected manner, supporting the inner workings of the practice.
