SPACE Architects shortlisted for Maltings' development

SPACE are delighted to announce that we have been shortlisted by RIBA for a competition to design a ‘landmark cultural attraction’ in the heart of Berwick-upon-Tweed.

The aims for the new venue include creating a focal point for visitors and residents of Berwick, becoming a key driver for its culture-led regeneration. The existing Maltings venue is not fit for purpose and has failed in its quest to exploit its unique location by the river.

The Maltings’ doors are expected to open again in 2025 with the development planned to begin on site in February 2023. Funding for the project will come from Borderlands and Northumberland County Council.

New facilities are expected to include a larger auditorium with extra seating, a dedicated cinema space, restaurant and bar, studio theatre and a flexible-use education, event, screening and rehearsal space.

The Maltings is expected to provide a high-profile visual symbol that acts as a catalyst for economic growth, job creation, renewed civic pride, destination tourism and creative and commercial development for Berwick-upon-Tweed.
