A Celebration Two Centuries in the Making

Last weekend, Hopetown Darlington marked an extraordinary moment in history. Two hundred years after Locomotion No. 1 first crossed the Skerne Bridge, visitors gathered to retrace the journey that transformed how the world moved. The anniversary celebrations brought together communities, historians, and railway enthusiasts to honour the pioneering spirit that began right here in the North East, with His Royal Highness the Duke of Edinburgh, Prince Edward, in attendance to mark the occasion.

At the heart of the celebrations was The Anniversary Journey, a re-enactment of that first voyage along sections of the original Stockton and Darlington Railway. The restored replica of Locomotion No. 1 and the passenger carriage experiment once again travelled the historic line, cheered on by spectators as they connected with a legacy that began in 1825 and continues to shape the region today.

Hopetown Darlington served as both a focal point and a fitting stage for the festivities. Within its beautifully restored buildings, visitors explored the STEAM to the Future exhibition, commissioned art installations, and immersive experiences that reflected on two centuries of engineering innovation. The site has re-emerged not only as a centre for heritage but as a living, evolving cultural destination that invites new generations to engage with the region’s story.

SPACE Architects were appointed as Lead Designers, Masterplanners, Architects, Landscape Architects and Principal Designers for the transformation of Hopetown. As architects of this highly rewarding project, we proudly reflect on the team’s dedicated contributions, which have successfully balanced the delicate intricacies of historical conservation with the need to create an engaging, contemporary visitor experience for all ages.

The design approach at Hopetown sought to honour the ingenuity of the past while creating a destination with enduring relevance. The rejuvenated Goods Shed, North Road Station Museum, and Carriage Works each play a vital role in this narrative, offering spaces where history and innovation coexist. From the reinstatement of original stonework and glazing to the creation of new landscapes and play areas, every detail reflects a deep respect for place and purpose.

Commenting, David Coundon, Director at SPACE, said, "Hopetown is a remarkable convergence of heritage and innovation, where we've embraced the challenge of restoring historically significant buildings while integrating contemporary design and technology to enhance the visitor experience. It's a celebration of the past brought vividly to life for future generations to enjoy."

For SPACE, this meaningful project has been an absolute pleasure to be a part of. It stands as a celebration of collaboration and shared ambition, a project shaped by many hands, from local craftspeople and engineers to exhibition designers and artists. We are proud to see the cultural and community impact Hopetown is already having in Darlington and across the wider region.

As the anniversary weekend reminded us, Hopetown is more than a preservation project. It is a living reminder of how design can revive history and celebrate identity. Two hundred years on, from this place that changed the world, the story of innovation continues.
