Behind the Scenes of All at Sea

Live Theatre

Nearly two decades after our relationship with Live Theatre began, it continues beyond the spaces we helped create. Through our sponsorship of All at Sea, we’re proud to support the people and ideas that keep the magic of the theatre alive.

Beginning its run at Live Theatre on September 24th, All at Sea is the world premiere of a new play by acclaimed writer Alison Carr. Inspired by the infamous Canoe Man story, it explores the complexities of human behaviour and challenges audiences to consider their own morals through an intimate and thought-provoking performance.

Live Theatre is a warm, welcoming place that embraces you the moment you enter. SPACE’s 2008 redevelopment repurposed and expanded its historic Grade II buildings, creating an intimate theatre alongside rehearsal studios, writers’ rooms and new spaces for audiences and artists. Sitting along the Quayside, Live Theatre remains a cultural gem of the region.

On September 17th, members of SPACE Architects had the privilege of observing a behind-the-scenes look at the rehearsal process. Witnessing the actors' and director's dedication and craft in real time during a two-hour session reinforced our belief that the final production will be outstanding.

With just two actors, Sarah Belcher as Deborah and Phil Corbitt as Colin, it was mesmerising to watch them capture such a wide range of emotions, skilfully exploring themes of marriage, deceit, and the extremes of human behaviour.

It was also clear that director Maria Crocker and writer Alison Carr have a profound connection to the story, expertly portraying this sensitive and complex narrative to audiences. Every detail, from vocal intonations to stage props, were thoughtfully considered throughout the process.

The play is a fictional retelling of the famous Canoe Man case, following a married couple, Deborah and Colin, as they grapple with the aftermath of a life-altering decision made under crippling debt. Set against a North East backdrop, the production asks audiences to consider how far they might go in pursuit of financial and emotional security.

Supporting regional art has never been more important in an era of rapid technological change and economic uncertainty, as human expression and craft continue to inspire and challenge us. SPACE is proud to sponsor such a well-acted and thought-provoking performance, and we hope audiences will come along to experience All at Sea for themselves.

All at Sea runs at Live Theatre from September 24th to October 10th. Find out more and book tickets at live.org.uk.
